Rivers Community Orchard
The Rivers Nursery Site has a continuous history of cultivation of horticultural material stretching back as far as the 17th Century. Thomas Rivers was born in Sawbridgeworth in 1798 and was responsible for consolidating the reputation of the nursery that his grandfather founded.
Fruit production was the main function of the nursery and Thomas Rivers has been responsible for the introduction of nearly 70 new varieties. The nursery closed at the end of the 1980’s. The site is owned by East Herts District Council and managed by the Rivers Nursery Site and Orchard Group.
