About Highfield Park Orchard - St Albans
The Highfield Park is some 60 acres in size to the east of St Albans on the site of the former Hill End and Cell Barnes Hospitals. The Park is managed by a charitable trust and there are two orchards within the Park area - each associated with the time when Hospitals were producing their own produce. As a consequence of the redevelopment process, only parts of each orchard remain. Most trees are 60 -70 years old.
The Trust has restored and enhanced with new planting, both orchards over the past 10 years with the help of a Countryside Stewardship grant. A new plum orchard has also been created and a smaller apple orchard planted in the allotment area. There is a very interesting “arcure” apple hedge at the Cell Barnes orchard. The Trust has an Apple Day each year - first Sunday of October and also sell their own apple juice from the Highfield Park Centre.
